The Napier Port Primary Sector Awards articulate the story of excellence within rural Hawke’s Bay and celebrate success, business innovation and growth. The winners represent a wide range of the primary sector who are making an immense contribution to the growth and success of the industry.
Organised by the Hawke’s Bay A & P Society, the Napier Port Primary Sector Awards are long established and contribute significantly to the primary industry across the region. This year marks the 50th year of the Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year award and entrants across all categories have represented some of the finest and most innovative, industrious primary producers in the country and produce some of the highest quality food and fibre to be found anywhere in the world.
Entries for each award will open on Thursday 21 October and are a fantastic platform for entrants to work with a group of expert judges and business mentors. It is also the opportunity for those at the pinnacle of their operation to show what they are capable of achieving.
The champions of the Hawke’s Bay primary sector were announced and celebrated for their outstanding success at a sell-out awards function for 500 people at the Tomoana Showgrounds in April.
This year marks the 50th year of the Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year award and entrants across all categories have represented some of the finest and most innovative, industrious primary producers in the country and produce some of the highest quality food and fibre to be found anywhere in the world.
It is incredibly important for us to celebrate the excellence within the Primary Sector and those that showcase absolute best practice whether that be in their career, on farm, on-orchard or in industry.
The Napier Port Primary Sector Awards are opportunity to encourage people to think of who is making a difference and nominate them for their respective award category. The awards represent and recognise leaders, past, present and future, who are all contributing to making our region strive and succeed.
Previous recipients of all the award categories have carried on achieving incredible heights within the sector not only within Hawke’s Bay, but throughout the country.

The Napier Port Primary Sector Awards are made up of nine awards spanning the entire Primary Sector. Nominations open on Thursday 21 October and you can enter or nominate someone into the following award categories.
Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year award identifies, promotes and celebrates excellence in pastoral farming in Hawke’s Bay. This award recognises those who are benchmarked in the top percentage of farmers and are paving the way within the sector.
Pan Pac Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year award is to showcase the best examples of farm forestry in our region. Eligible properties will demonstrate forestry and tree planting integrated into land management.
Horticentre Hawke’s Bay Horticulturalist of the Year award recognises an individual’s significant contribution to Horticulture in Hawke’s Bay through their innovation, resilience and leadership along with their commitment to education, the environment and social responsibility.
Hastings District Council Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Industry Leader is a peer nominated award that recognising outstanding leadership within the primary sector while demonstrating a wider commitment to Hawke’s Bay.
Unison Hawke’s Bay Professional of the Year is a peer nominated award which recognises an individual providing professional services to the primary sector in addition to taking into account their community footprint.
BWR Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Innovation Award is open to individuals, organisations or businesses who have made an outstanding contribution with their knowledge, skills and application to improve the performance of the primary industries through an innovative service or product.
Rural Directions Hawke’s Bay Shepherd of the Year is open to anyone that holds a shepherding job title that wishes to showcase their on farm skills, knowledge and abilities. The recipient will also be able to demonstrate their drive and ambition within the primary sector.
Lawson Robinson Hawke’s Bay Scholarship aims to recognise outstanding academic and leadership qualities in a student currently enrolled in a full time land based production industries programme.
Laurie Dowling Memorial Award recognises an individual who has significantly contributed to agriculture in Hawke’s Bay. A person who has given their time selflessly to work for the betterment of agriculture in Hawke’s Bay.
